Parts, lines, tapers
What to ask for
Five things worth knowing before you sit down: what each one is, how long it takes and how often it needs a visit.
Parts
A part is a line cut into the hair with a trimmer. Hard parts are deep and sharp; soft parts are lighter. It reads clearest on a short fade.
15 minutes added to a cut
Redrawn at every visit or every other
Lines
Lines are the edges: hairline, temples, neckline and beard. A lineup squares or rounds them and a razor cleans them.
25 minutes on its own
Every one to two weeks keeps it sharp
Tapers
A taper shortens gradually and stops at an edge, without going to the skin. It grows out gently and suits an office.
40 minutes
Every two to three weeks
Drop and burst fades
A drop curves behind the ear. A burst fans out around it in a half circle. Both go down to the skin or stop short of it.
About 50 minutes
Every two to three weeks
Designs
A design is a pattern drawn with the trimmer: a step, a line, a shape. We agree it with you first and we tell you how long it takes.
20 minutes for a small one
75 to 90 minutes with a fade
Bring a design to the chair
- 01
Step 1: Book your visit
Book Fade and design, or a fade and a small design, with the barber whose work you like. Tell them it is a design when you book.
- 02
Step 2: What to bring
A photo of the part, the line or the pattern, or a screenshot. Show how you wear your hair on the days between cuts.
- 03
Step 3: When you arrive
Arrive a few minutes before your time. Your barber calls your name from the board by the door.
- 04
Step 4: What to expect
A talk first, at the chair. Your barber tells you what the design needs and how long it takes, then draws it with the trimmer, step by step.
